Weymouth Armed Forces Day Veterans Parade – 18/06/2017

A group of us got up stupidly early last Sunday morning, 18th June, to head down to Weymouth for their Armed Forces Day Veterans’ Parade. A few had stayed over in a hotel the previous night, so we all congregated in the Lodmoor car park for coffee and application of sun cream! We boarded the specially laid-on buses to take us to the start point, and formed up behind the Aden Veterans’ Association who were leading the parade along with the Wessex band and standards. The service of remembrance was cut short due to the blistering heat, and lots of much needed bottled water was distributed through the ranks. We set off along the seafront road which was lined with spectators and supporters and the applause was non-stop from start to finish.

There was a reception at the Pavilion, with a 40s style singing group and welcome refreshments. Most of us strolled back along the prom, stopping to look at the various stalls and military vehicles before enjoying lunch in the sunshine. Of course, some of us indulged in the obligatory seaside related activities, like ice creams, sticks of rock, a few beers and even a dip in the sea!

It was a long, hot, tiring, but very enjoyable day which resulted in some interesting beret tan-lines. We’re already looking forward to next year’s parade!
